Softball postseason play and football dominate the week ahead for all three Newton High schools, as all three teams participate in postseason play on the diamond this week.
Alcovy opens the week at home on Tuesday for the opening round of the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament. The Tigers will take on Rockdale County at home in the opening game of the region tournament.
The Tigers will take on the Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. The winner of the game will advance to the next round Oct. 9.
The Tigers defeated Rockdale 10-2 at home earlier this season.
The Alcovy varsity football team will have the week off after falling to Newton High 17-14 Friday night.
The Tigers will return to action on the gridiron on Oct. 17 against Morrow.
Eastside continues play
Depending on the final results of Eastside's softball double-header against Madison County on Saturday, the Eagles could continue postseason play Monday.
If the Eagles win their series with the Red Raiders, Eastside will advance to the Region 8-AAAA tournament final Oct. 10.
Final scores for Eastside vs. Madison County were not available at press time.
The Eagles varsity football team takes the field this Friday after a bye week against Lanier.
Eastside travels to Sugar Hill to take on the Longhorns at 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles are 1-0 all-time against Lanier, defeating the Longhorns 20-14 last season.
Rams host first round
The Newton High Rams will also host a first-round game in the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament Oct. 8.
Newton will host Luella, the tournament's No. 3 seed, at 6:30 p.m.
The Rams defeated Luella 6-4 earlier this season.
If both the Rams and Alcovy win their first round games, the two Newton High teams will face each other in the second round of the tournament Oct. 9 at Alcovy.
The Newton High football team will host its first home game since Aug. 30 this week when it welcomes Druid Hills to Sharp Stadium.
The Rams defeated the Red Devils 19-3 last season.
