COVINGTON, Ga. — It was an exciting night for local baseball as both Newton County baseball teams in action Thursday night came away with impressive victories.

The Newton Rams won their second straight game by defeating Miller Grove 6-0. The Rams were helped by Christian Murray’s complete game, three-hitter shutout performance that featured him recording 11 strikeouts.

Jamal Boykin also knocked a home run in the victory that comes on the heels of Wednesday’s 15-0, three-inning route of Salem. Both wins are a nice bounce-back from a season opening 4-0 loss to Kennesaw Mountain. Thursday’s triumph improved the Rams’ record to 2-1 in the young season ahead of Saturday’s round robin style series of games with Eastside and Alcovy.

Speaking of Alcovy, the Tigers also picked up their second win of the season in improbable, dramatic fashion, beating Stockbridge 13-4.

Down 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Alcovy cut into the lead by adding a run in that bottom half of the frame. But the win was clinched with an improbable 12-run bottom-of-the-sixth where Stockbridge pitching fell apart and Alcovy’s batters and base runners took advantage.

Ryan Spikes got the win on the mound in a complete game performance as the Tigers improved to 2-1 ahead of Saturday’s games with Eastside (1 p.m.) and Newton (3 p.m.).
