This past Saturday, hundreds of kids took to the water for the Rockdale County Swim League annual county meet championship. Competing summer league teams were the Covington Y Piranhas, Brentwood Barracudas, Deer Run Dolphins, Honeycreek Splash, Meadowbrook Marlins and Westchester Lakes Wahoos.

All teams met at Johnson Park on June 30. There were 88 events through out the day, with children under 10 competing in the morning, and the older children competing separately late into the afternoon.

The meet ended with Covington Piranhas coming out on top in the points count, followed by the Deer Run Dolphins in second, and the Brentwood Barracudas in third.

"Everyone really pulled through, a lot of people dropped times and that's what made this one of our best meets of the season," said Deer Run Dolphins' assistant head coach Taylor Horton.

This annual meet has occurred for the past 20 years. Summer league and this meet that it leads up to is a fun filled activity that most kids look forward to every summer.

"It's an excellent way for your child to learn how to swim at a higher level. They learn all four strokes - back stroke, butterfly, breast stroke, and freestyle. They learn the correct technique. They'll have a safe time the rest of their life as far as becoming an excellent swimmer," said Greg Ellwanger, coach for the Rockdale Riptides and founder/organizer of the Covington Y team.

The event was sanctioned by the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association and hosted by Johnson Park Recreation Center.

Summer league swimming is open to the public to register for every spring and occurs through out late May and the month of June.
