Football was not the only sport kicking off this week in Newton County.
The Lady Eagles of Oxford College (0-1) opened their 2017 season Tuesday night hosting the Lady Highlanders of Gordon State College
(1-0) in Oxford.
Oxford's defense rejected two flurries of Highlander shots on goal in the first half, keeping the match scoreless, but in the 30th minute of play,
Joseline Benitez sent a shot over the head of the Oxford keeper -- who was charging out of her area to block the shot -- and into the Eagles'
net to give Gordon a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Lady Highlanders dominated second half play, stretching their lead to 2-0 on a chip from Skylar Bertram off her own deflected shot in the
10th minute. Nine minutes later, Gordon's Nina Burgess and Cynthia Coronel both scored within a minute of each other to put their side up
4-0 less than halfway through the second stanza.
Coach Tinna Gallagher's Lady Eagles travel to the Port City Classic in Wilmington, NC this weekend to face Howard Community College
Saturday and Cape Fear Community College Sunday. Oxford's next home game is Wednesday, August 30, at 7 p.m. against Georgia
Military College JV.
