Stephenson hands Newton girls first region loss

With two region wins in their back pockets, the Lady Rams liked their chances at a third and the upset over Stephenson Tuesday. Then the two teams hit the floor and reality sunk in.

The Lady Jaguars throttled Newton 76-35 to move to 7-1 (3-0 Region 2-AAAAA). Meanwhile the loss snapped Newton’s three-game winning streak and handed the Lady Rams their first region loss of the young season.

Stephenson raced out to a 13-6 lead and never looked back. They outscored the Lady Rams 24-9 in the decisive second quarter and kept piling it on in the second half.

Three players scored in double figures for the Lady Jaguars led by Naima Jackson’s 17 points. Kaliyah Mitchell scored 16 and Joylyn Stroud had 15. Precious Price was the high-point player for Newton with seven.

Newton can ill-afford any hangover when they travel to Eastside tomorrow. The lady Eagles swept them in both games last year after Newton took both games in 2009-10. Eastside heads into tomorrow’s game riding a five-game winning streak.
