Soccer teams give back

As fall blows through Covington and the air gets colder, sports start to work their way inside.

That's what's happening at the Covington Y, where its soccer season just ended.

All 27 teams in the YMCA's Recreational Youth Soccer League concluded their seasons with a tournament/food drive on Nov. 10.

There were five division champions crowned at the tournament, each receiving a T-shirt and, of course, bragging rights among friends.

The coaches, players, and parents brought canned goods and frozen turkeys to donate to the local food pantry.

The league collected more than 100 cans of food and six turkeys. The Y will get back on the soccer pitch again for the spring season, concluding with a tournament to benefit the troops in honor of Armed Forces Day on May 18.

The winning teams in each region were the Drew Mobley coached Team Brazil in Under-4, Seth Tuttle coached Team France in Under-6, Steven Livingston coached Team Cameroon in Under-8, Morten Oftedal coached Team Egypt in Under-8 and Trey Long and Bill Campbell coached Team Brazil in Under-14.
