Second Newton team falls short

The first team into the Dixie Boys World series, held at City Pond Park starting on Aug. 4 is the hometown squad comprised of Newton County All-Stars.

Newton County had a chance at a second world series entry as it sent a team to Columbus for the Dixie Boys Georgia State Championship.

However, things didn't work out so well for Newton County, falling in its first two games and being eliminated from world series contention.

Newton went back and forth with Columbia County early on in Saturday's game, before succumbing to too many errors. Columbia County came away with a 17-14 victory putting Newton in the loser's bracket.

"Saturday, it went back and forth," said coach Ricky Vaughn. "We probably had seven or eight errors."

In its second and final game of the tournament, Newton County was dominated by Mountain Park and its star pitcher.
Mountain Park's ace struck out 13 batters in just five innings and advancing his team.

The tournament runs through most of this week, with the championship on Thursday to fill in another spot on the world series bracket.

10 other states in the Dixie Boys World Series, and will open up against Virginia in the tournament's third game at 4 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Yet to be determined teams from North Carolina and South Carolina will open the event at 1 p.m., along with Louisiana and Arkansas.
