The Advanced Disposal golf team of Social Circle took first place in the annual Phil Peppers Golf Tourney May 3, hosted by the Social Circle Lions Club.
The winning members were Steve Edwards, Doug White, David Keener, Mark Odekisk and Bob Bailey.
The annual tournament, which takes place at Hard Labor Creek golf course, was named after Phil Peppers, who suffered a heart attack on the course in 1998.
Peppers, a retired Atlanta police officer, had been a fixture in Social Circle as a member of the Lions Club and, at the time, a recently-elected member of the city council.
He enjoyed playing golf nearly every day, and died at the age of 57 on the course.
A year later, Peppers’ fellow Lions Club members decided to host a golf tournament in their fallen friend’s honor.
The annual proceeds help the blind and hearing-impaired in the community, which is one of the Lions Club’s main missions.
Peppers’ daughter Pam Greer, a longtime, former teacher at Newton High School, and Peppers’ wife Vickie were on hand to congratulate the winning team.
