Newton County Miracle League begins play

The Miracle League of Newton County’s 2016 spring season is officially underway after a weekend full of games at City Pond Park.

The season kicked off at 6 p.m. Friday featuring the Braves vs. the Rangers and then a matchup of the Cubs and Rockies swung into action shortly after.

Two more games were played Saturday morning, with the Marlins and Red Sox meeting at 10 a.m. and the Indians and Phillies following.

The season continues every Friday and Saturday through May 14 with two games on Tuesday, May 17 and the final two on Thursday, May 19.

The Miracle League of Newton County is in its second year of competition, after a community-wide effort began in 2006. In 2009, the field began on its path to become a reality. Groundbreaking took place for the field at City Pond Park on Aug. 21, 2012 with construction starting Sept. 17, 2012. The first pitch was throw on April 25, and attendance has been growing ever since.

The Miracle League of Newton County is for athletes with disabilities to enjoy athletics, teamwork and American's past time - baseball.
