NCRC swaps Dixie Youth for Little League

The Newton County Recreation Commission announced Tuesday it's changing up part of its youth baseball program. Beginning next season, the NCRC will be affiliated with Little League and will no longer be a part of Dixie Youth.

The change affects the 5-12 year-old age group and ends a 32-year relationship with Dixie Youth. It is expected to be a seamless transition.

"We felt like there needed to be a change made in our program," NCRC director Tommy Hailey said. "I think due to decreasing numbers, it pays to try and make a change. Hopefully this is for the better."

Hailey added, the NCRC will still continue to operate with Dixie Boys. Dixie Youth and Dixie Boys are two separate entities.

Joining Little League expands competition. Dixie Youth encompassed 13 states throughout the Southeast. Little League teams play in all 50 states and worldwide.

"We are making the move to a good organization — a well-established organization and we're excited," Hailey said. "We've had a great relationship with Dixie Youth and wish them well. But I think it's time to move forward."
