County Rec teams start season

The Newton County Recreation Commission football season opened the 2013 football season last night at Turner Lake Football Field.

Newton County kicks off full League play tonight, with the Ducks and the Tide and the Auburn Tigers and the LSU Tigers opening play at 6 p.m. in Division I and Division II action.

The Newton County Recreation Department will feature 30 teams between the two leagues this year, featuring six Training League teams and 24 League teams that will be split into three divisions.

Games will be played at Turner Lake Football Field and Wolverine Field throughout the week, with primary Training League games being featured on Mondays and Thursdays and League games featured on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The Newton County Recreation Commission's football program is
offered to children ages 5-12.

Players are broken down into four age groups, with 5- to 6-year-olds particiapting in the Training League; 7- to 8-year-olds playing in Division I; 9- to 10-year-olds in Division II and 11- to 12 year-olds in Division III.

Player are provided a helmet, shoulder pads, a team jersey and a pair of game socks by the Recreation Commission.

The league will run through late October, with the Recreation Commission hosting its annual bowl game in November.
