The Social Circle Lions Club hosted the 2014 Phil Peppers Golf Tournament Friday, May 2, at the Hard Labor Creek State Park in Social Circle.
The club raised over $11,000 at this year's event.
Georgia Municipal Association earned the top spot in this year's tournament.
Georgia Municipal Association team members included Steve Macon, Ken Swanson, Mike Walton and Rodney Dodd.
The Atlanta Arms and Ammo team of Donnie Green, Matt Sellers, Jud Hall and Scottie Moss finished second.
The tournament is held annually in honor of Peppers, a retired Atlanta police officer who suffered a heart attack on the course in 1998. Peppers was a fixture in Social Circle as a member of the Lions Club and, at the time, a recently-elected member of the city council.
He enjoyed playing golf nearly every day, and died at the age of 57 on the course.
A year after his passing, Peppers’ fellow Lions Club members decided to host a golf tournament in their fallen friend’s honor.
The annual proceeds help the blind and hearing-impaired in the community, which is one of the Lions Club’s main missions.
Peppers’ daughter Pam Greer, a longtime, former teacher at Newton High School,
and Peppers’ wife, Vickie, were on hand to congratulate the winning team.
