One of the year’s most impressive meteor showers, the Perseid shower, will peak in brilliance next weekend, and Hard Labor Creek State Park is offering kayak tours of Lake Rutledge to enhance the viewing experience.

The park will host multiple "Paddle Under the Perseids" tours Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings at the Lake Rutledge boat ramp. A park ranger will lead the tour, which costs $20 for those renting multi-person kayaks and $10 for those supplying their own kayak. Parking is $5. People must register in advance and spots are limited.

Tours will take place at 10 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday and at 11:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

"This is considered by many to be the year's best meteor shower because the meteors are often bright and leave long trails," according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ website. The Perseid shower will yeild around 70 shooting stars an hour this year, according to an article in USA Today.

The peak time to watch the shower will be around 1 a.m., Monday, Aug. 12, according to the article.

Call the park at 706-557-3001 to register.
