Covington loves its 5Ks, and the Newton County Home Builders Association recently joined in the fun with its "Heat of the Night" run on June 11.

More than 100 runners participated in the race, raising $2,000 for the struggling association, which has seen its membership drop from a high of 300 to 65, said financial secretary Kim McNary.

The run took place in the evening and was kicked off with the roaring sound of Duke McNary's Harley; no need for a horn or gun.

The overall male winner was John Van Steenbergh of Flowery Branch and female winner was Denielle Singleton of McDonough.
The overall masters winners were Eric John of Covington and Raeanne Watkins of Tucker.

Several local racers placed first in their age group.
