Having each Newton County team win is the ideal situation, but two out of three isn’t bad. Both Eastside and Newton finished Friday with another “W” in the column, while the Tigers fell to Rockdale.
Eastside traveled to Walnut Grove in the Eagles’ regular season finale and came away with a 36-19 victory, which wasn’t as close as the score looks. Austin Holloway led the Eagles with five touchdowns, four passing and one rushing. Eastside will host Griffin next week at home as the teams play for the No. 3 seed in the region.
The Rams ran roughshod over Lakeside with a 53-0 win at home for homecoming. Newton got even better news on the night as Tucker beat Lovejoy by 10, making Newton the No. 1 seed and giving them the lead to win the region championship with a win over nearby county-rival Rockdale next week.
Alcovy was fighting for its playoff life. The Tigers trailed the entire game but made it 18-6 late in the third. Turnovers and penalties plagued Alcovy for the rest of the game and the Tigers fell to Rockdale 25-6. A win would’ve given Alcovy the No. 4 seed in the region, but now they fall into a three-way tie with Rockdale and Lakeside.
