Seeking a bounce back from a tough 13-2 loss on Feb. 17 to Walnut Grove, the Eastside Eagles baseball team hosted Newton at Eagle Field for what proved to be an offensive showcase for the Eagle hitters as they combined for an impressive 15 hits.

The Rams’ starting pitching looked solid as the game began, but in the bottom of the second inning the flood gates opened as Austin Holloway drew first blood with a solid single.

Holloway led the Eagle offense with five RBIs. Not only was Holloway electric at the plate, but behind the plate he gunned down three Rams who either attempted to steal a base or lead off too far from the bag.

SS Cole Green flawlessly assisted Holloway with a spectacular play at second base. So far in this young season, Holloway and Green are proving to be a lethal defensive combination for the Eagles. On the mound, Ryan Shirley got the win for Eastside after throwing seven solid innings while allowing only 3 runs, with 14 first pitch strikes. Contributing to the Eagles’ win was Tanner Feeney, Cody Moody and Riley Ralston, who all had multiple hits.

The win lifted Eastside to a 3-1 mark, while Newton fell to 2-3 on the young season. The Eagles will have a chance to pick up another in-county win Tuesday night when they play host to Alcovy (1-2) at 5:30 p.m.
