Eastside’s run back to wrestling prominence took another step forward Wednesday with a win over county rivals Newton and Alcovy  to claim this year’s Newton Cup.

The Eagles took down the Rams 51-30 to open their competition thanks to a strong showing from the lighter wrestlers on the team. Roderick Boley won in the 113-pound weight class as did reigning state champion Tyler Bailey (120), Misha Felton (126), Patrick Cochran (132), Kevin Thompson (152) and Jacob Wilder (160). Newton’s Jamontavious Belcher (103) was the lone winner in the lighter weights.

The Rams did hold their own in the heavier weight classes. Dale Warren (170), Jeremy Fuller (182) and Alfa Fornan (195) each won for Newton.

Eastside’s performance against the Tigers was even more impressive. Eastside dispatch Alcovy 58-18 to reclaim the Cup.
