Eastside’s scoring output gradually increased until Musashi Briem made it a no-doubter with a grand slam in the seventh to seal the Eagles’ 13-3 road win over Johnson, Gainesville, Monday.
Gray Ritchey kept the Knights off the scoreboard throughout the first two innings. In the third, he gave up three walks, along with three base hit singles, to make it 4-3 with the bases loaded.
Eastside coach Jon Ayres then made a pitching change and sent senior Daniel Garrett to the mound. Garrett pitched the rest of the game, and the Knights (0-8, 0-7 Region 8-AAAA) wouldn’t get a runner past second for the remainder.
Meanwhile, Eastside pounded away with a single from Evan House in the second and a double from Briem that produced a pair of runs.
The offense continued in the third with back to back doubles from Drew Buckhault and Garrett that plated two more runs. The fourth inning saw Briem hit a two-run homer to extend the Eastside lead to 6-3. House collected the RBI in the fifth and Hunter Ballard doubled in the sixth to make the score 8-3. The Knights loaded the bases in the seventh on a pair of walks and an error to set the table for Briem’s grand slam to clear the bases. Ballard and Travis Smith also singled before the inning came to a close.
