Croone leads with 30 over Runnin' Bulldogs

The following is an update on former Newton County basketball players at the collegiate level. Updates run through Nov. 22.

Stephen Croone, Newton- Croone and the Furman Paladins are currently 2-1 this season, opening their season with a pair of wins over Sewanee and Gardner-Webb.

Croone leads the Paladins in scoring 21.3 points a game, while averaging a team-high 33 minutes a contest.

Croone has also dished out a team-high nine assists, while averaging 5.3 rebounds-per-game.

In Furman's 75-64 win over Gardner-Webb, Croone scored a season-high 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.

Furman returns to action Nov. 26 on the road at Virginia Tech. The game can be seen nationally on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.

Jamon Hawkins, Newton- Hawkins and the Georgia Southwestern Canes are a perfect 5-0 this season.

Hawkins is second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points a game. Hawkins has started all five contests for the Canes, averaging more than 30 minutes a game.

Hawkins is shooting 42.6 percent from the field, while grabbing 3.4 rebounds a game.

Hawkins and Georgia Southwestern return to action Nov. 29 at home against Florida International University.

Derrick Henry, Newton- While Henry continues to recover from knee surgery after tearing his ACL last February, the Winthrop Eagles are 3-1 this season with victories over Roanoke, USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.

Henry was the Eagles' leading scorer last season at 11.3 points-per-game before his injury.

Winthrop returns to action Nov. 27 at home against James Madison.

Meagan Tucker, Alcovy- Tucker and the Auburn Tigers are 3-1 on the season, posting a 2-0 record at home this season.

Auburn opened its season with a pair of home wins against Georgia Southern and Jacksonville before falling on the road to Temple. In their most recent game, the Tigers defeated Alabama A&M 77-49.

As a freshman, Tucker has played in four games, averaging more than 21 minutes a contest, while shooting .357 from the field, scoring 4.3 points a game.

Tucker has also pulled down three rebounds while dishing out 10 assists.

Auburn returns to action today on the road against Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Ashley Williams, Alcovy- Williams and the Alabama Crimson Tide are currently 1-3 this season, falling in their first three regular season games before defeating Wisconsin Wednesday 70-62.

Williams has played in all four contests for Alabama, averaging 16 minutes a game of action.

Williams is currently shooting 61 percent from the fielding and 80 percent at the free-thrown line, averaging 8.5 points a contest in her freshman season.

The forward has also grabbed 18 total rebounds this season for a 4.5 rebounds-per-game average.

Williams and the Crimson Tide return to action tomorrow night at 7 at home against Alabama A&M.

Kate Palo, Alcovy- Palo and the Georgia College and State Bobcats are 2-0 this season with wins over West Georgia and Shorter.

Palo did not see action in the Bobcats' first two contests of the sason.

Georgia College and State returns to action Tuesday at home against Clark Atlanta.
