PREP SOCCER: Late goal by Chris Martin helps Alcovy boys upset Heritage
Alcovy sports

COVINGTON, Ga. — The Alcovy Tigers boys soccer team may have given coach Brian Johnson his signature win Friday night.

The Tigers’ Chris Martin put up a pair of goals, including the game winner with 49 seconds remaining in the match — just moments after Heritage scored an equalizer on a penalty kick— to give Alcovy its first win over its Region 3-AAAAAA foe since the two schools have been grouped together.

The win is Alcovy’s first region victory of the season, raising its record to 4-8 overall and 1-7 in Region play. It also avenges a recent 5-2 defeat to the Patriots, and it snaps a four-game skid. The Tigers will next travel to Greenbrier (8-2, 6-2) on Tuesday.

The setback for Heritage was the Patriots’ second loss this week to a Newton County team.
