COVINGTON, Ga. — Byron Howard made the decision on National Signing Day to continue his football career at Gordon State College. While at Alcovy, Howard has been a dual-sport athlete playing basketball, too.
Howard lined up in the secondary for the Tigers, as he played a big part in what was one of the better scoring defenses in Region 3-AAAAAA.
Howard was not the only Tiger going to Gordon State, as he will be joined by five of his teammates in Barnesville.
“I feel relieved and blessed. I cannot wait to fulfill my football career at Gordon State College,” Howard said. “It feels great [to go with a group of my teammates], we are still going to compete at a high level, and we are going to win.”
Even though Howard was not always a football player, his coaches commemorated his athletic ability and determination to make the transition that has allowed him to be able to continue his career at the next level.
“[Byron] is so athletic, all you have to do is tell him to come in and do something and he will do it. [For] him to transfer from basketball to play football as a [defensive back] shows a lot of heart,” Alcovy defensive backs coach TC Robinson said. “It tells me a lot about [Byron] with him only playing football for a couple of years and [still] helping out and winning a starting position as my cornerback.”
Bryon’s combination of size and athletic ability make him someone who can make an impact in many different sports, Robinson said.
“[Byron] deserves this opportunity, he is playing basketball and having great games [where he] is dropping 19-20 points a game. Once he is done with [basketball] he will be coming to track,” Robinson said.
Come fall, Howard will be bringing his athleticism and determination to the Highlanders on Saturdays.
