Alcovy picked up its second win in as many Region 2-AAAAAA games Wednesday, defeating cross-town rivals Newton 9-1 in six innings.

The win came after another dominating performance, a 13-1 victory against Rockdale on Thursday.

However, even though Alcovy didn't need all seven innings to defeat Newton Wednesday, the game was still in doubt during the early stages.
Alcovy took a one-run lead in the first inning after the Tigers' leadoff batter, Lakeiyah Sorrells reached on a walk, and eventually came home to score.

Newton was able to answer the very next frame, as the first batter of the second inning, Marie Diaz, was hit by a pitch. She moved to second on a walk to Ashton McKinson, and to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on Caitlyn Bowen's single.

The game remained knotted at 1-1 until the fourth inning, when Alcovy finally decided to turn it on.

The Tigers, who had one hit and one walk in each of the first three innings, had two hits and two walks in the fourth, leading to three runs.

"We can't wait to turn it on," Alcovy coach Monica Marks said. "We have to turn it on before the game starts. That's a little frustrating; we have to try to figure out what's going on get off to a good start."

The Tigers (12-2-1, 2-0) loaded the bases after a hit and two walks before Chelsea Murphy came to the plate with two outs.

Murphy delivered a double to right center, plating Raven Smith and Marie Peck and moving Sorrells to third. Sorrells then came home as Newton had trouble getting the ball back to the pitcher.

Alcovy added three more runs in the very next inning, this time relying on one hit and four walks.

Morgan Mobley led off the fifth with a double and scored on a sacrifice by Kalia Johnson.

The next three batters would walk, before Alcovy scored one run on a pass ball and another on a stolen base trick play as Peck walked and headed immediately to second with a runner on third. As Newton made the throw to second, the runner, Raven Smith went for home.
The Tigers then held on in the bottom of the fifth behind solid defense and the pitching of Johnson.

Johnson allowed three hits and had five strikeouts in six innings of work.

"Kalia has done a good job for us," Marks said. "Both of our pitchers have; I've been pleased with both of them. Kalia did great today."

The Tigers finished up the game after Morgan Beshears reached on a single, stole second and came home on a triple by Mobley.
Mobley ended the game on the eight-run rule stealing home on an errant throw.

While the Tigers' bats struggled, they stayed aggressive on the base paths throughout the night creating opportunities while the offense waited to get going.

"We want to be aggressive on the base paths, but if they're going to give us the play, we're going to take it," Marks said.

Alcovy will look to get things going earlier as they travel to Morrow on Thursday and then go to the Morgan County Lady Dog Invitational on Friday.

"We've got to figure out why we're getting off to poor starts and try to correct it before Thursday," Marks said.

Newton, which was led by two hits from Diaz, including a double, continues region play, hosting Luella on Thursday.
