An intact World War I bomb was found Tuesday afternoon in Winder, with the U.S. Air Force called in to retrieve the device.

The bomb later was to be taken to the Sheriff's Office's shooting range to be detonated.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., Barrow County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a Creekwood Road residence in reference to a suspicious object. They evacuated five homes in the area and contacted the University of Georgia Police Department Bomb Disposal Unit.

The bomb squad arrived and took a picture of the device, a round metal cylinder with four fins, to send to the FBI.

The homeowner was apparently working in his yard when he discovered the bomb.

"Anytime we have a suspicious device such as this, we contact the University of Georgia Police Department Bomb Disposal Unit," Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said. "The safety of the residents and the protection of their property are our top priority."

Members of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit from Dobbins Air Force Base arrived after dark and placed the device in an ammo box to be taken to the shooting range.

It was not the first time an antique explosive was found in Barrow County. In April 2010, a World War II "pineapple-style" grenade was found at Commissioner Eva Elder's home. The UGA bomb squad was called in to destroy it.
