Wed Update: Region games, wrestling postponed

UPDATED: Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.

With local schools still expected to be closed on Friday, the Region 2-AAAAAA basketball tournament is expected to begin Saturday with quarterfinal contests beginning at 11a.m.

The Rockdale County boys basketball program will begin play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Morrow at Newton High, with the girls game set to begin at 2 p.m. against Morrow at Newton.

Semifinal games will be held on Monday with championship games set for Tuesday.

Weather permitting, the Region 8-AAAAA tournament featuring Heritage and Salem will resume play Friday night. The region planned to play-in tournament games at noon and 1:30 p.m. Friday at Loganville before splitting regular tournament quarterfinal games at Loganville and Apalachee beginning at 4 p.m., Salem coach Noah Harrell said.

The GHSA announced that the Georgia High School Traditional Dual Wrestling Championships scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.

The state tournament was set to begin this weekend but has been pushed back to Feb. 21.

The opening round of the Region 2-AAAAAA boys basketball tournament has been postponed. No tournament games will be held tonight due to Dekalb County and Rockdale County schools closing.

Rockdale County was set to play the opening game at 4:30, with Newton vs. Alcovy to follow at 6 p.m.

The Region 8-AAAAA basketball tournament will have to wait for the new bout of winter weather to pass through before championship action tips off.

The region tournament has been postponed until Thursday, as long as region schools are in session.

The tournament was originally set to begin Monday, Feb. 10, with a play-in game, and run until Friday night.
