Ways to help for the holidays

With the holiday season fast approaching, many churches, schools, and community groups are organizing events to help families and the non-profits that help those families. Here are just a few:

Nehemiah Empowerment Group Ministries, a non-denominational church, seeks donations to feed and support needy families of Conyers and support and encouragement to the youth and adults in the community. Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale is offering a way to help Rockdale's children while getting a Thanksgiving bird. "Melt in your mouth" smoked turkeys, 10 to 12 pounds, are available from Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale for $40 each. Order deadline is Thursday, Nov. 10. Pickup is Wednesday, Nov 23, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Conyers First United Methodist Church, 921 Main St., Conyers. Operation Christmas Child at Smyrna Presbyterian and area churches is looking for local volunteers to fill empty shoe boxes with donated gifts of school supplies, toys, hygiene items and a letter of encouragement which will then be distributed to underprivileged children internationally. Gift-filled shoeboxes can be dropped off at Smyrna Presbyterian Church, 2920 Highway 212 SW, Conyers before Nov. 14. Royal Cathedral of Praise, 993 O'Kelly Street, Conyers, will be registering families for Toys for Tots (up to age 12) from Nov. 15 - Dec. 9, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (404) 923-4902.

Glenn's Bar-B-Que will be serving a free "Unto the Least of These" Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. to anyone without a place to celebrate. Reservations listing the number of people are required, though names are not necessary, and must be made by Saturday, Nov.19. Christmas Hope for the Holidays returns Dec. 16-18 in a community-wide collaborative event offering hope to families in need in the Rockdale community through the distribution of toys. Toys will be distributed at 1400 Parker Road, Conyers, to families in need. On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, the Royal Cathedral of Praise will serve a free Christmas Dinner, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., at 993 O'Kelly Street. The church is also in need of food donations and volunteers to serve during the Christmas Dinner. For more information, call (404) 923-4902.
