A Conyers man and woman were arrested and charged with armed robbery over the weekend after the victim of the robbery followed them and called police with their tag number.

Around 7:30 a.m. Saturday a 25-year-old woman was getting her toddler into her car at Summerset Apartments on Greenleaf Road when a black male approached her, put an object against her back and demanded she lay on the ground.

The victim, assuming it was a gun, did as she was ordered, and the man stole her purse and ran off in the direction of a parked gray Dodge Durango, being driven by a black female. The victim jumped into her vehicle and followed the robber, calling 911 with a tag number of the vehicle.

Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office ran the tag number, which came back to an address in Rockdale County. Working to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to the address, but did not find the man and woman accused of the robbery.  They were able to find out the address where the couple was living in Harvest Grove Apartments in Conyers.

Several deputies converged on the Harvest Grove Apartments and waited until the Durango arrived. They made contact with the male, 23-year-old Karlos Blake Washington, and the female, 24-year-old Zekelia Samone Sanders. Their vehicle, tag number and description matched that given by the victim.

Also in the vehicle was Washington’s 4-year-old son who reportedly told deputies “My Daddy took the pocketbook.”

Washington and Sanders were arrested and charged with robbery and cruelty to children. Washington also has charges of contempt of court/child support out of DeKalb County. They were taken to the Newton County Jail where they both remain.
