Touching Reunion

Dear Editor: This is about a mother who has not seen her son since August 27, 2009, which is the day this young man was incarcerated for crimes he did not commit.

Maggie Dwight is the mother of Nathan Christopher Dwight, the 22-year-old young black man who was charged, tried, convicted and sentenced to life plus 5 years for crimes committed by someone else.

Maggie Dwight has sat in a courtroom during the entire trial of her son only hearing the sounds of the courtroom, not being able to see her son, not seeing his expressions, or the color of the suit he was wearing.

Maggie Dwight is blind.

She has attempted to visit him in the jail facility, but that is only like talking to him on the phone. She can not even see her son on the screen that is made available to visit with inmates.

After my diligence and perseverance, on Oct.1, Maggie Dwight was granted permission from the Rockdale County Jail facility to visit with her son without the confines of a TV screen nor anything else to hamper her hugging and touching her son’s face to see him in the only way she can see since the loss of her eyesight.

This heartwarming reunion of a mother and her son was made possible by the very kind and considerate Sheriff Jeff Wigington with the coordination of Capt. Tommy Eaton, Lt. Jim Bogarts and Sgt. Pass.

This reunion was held in the old part of the jail facility inside Judge Rudy Horne’s courtroom. It was a very happy and tearful event for a mother who has not seen her son for over a year.
