For the second consecutive year, Rockdale County will provide civic education to the County’s youth through the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS).

Developed by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), GCAPS spotlights the ongoing need for increased civic awareness and engagement among Georgia’s youth. The program gives high school students direct access to local government by educating them about the responsibilities of local government and the essential services it provides to citizens. The program is funded through a grant from ACCG.

“We are excited to bring County government closer to another group of Rockdale youth,” Rockdale County GCAPS Program Manager Brittany Johnson said. “The GCAPS program offers our high school students a vital opportunity to experience government beyond the classroom and showcases the importance of local officials and citizens working together.”

Last year, Rockdale County was chosen as one of four new GCAPS programs in Georgia. The County selected 12 high school students from across Rockdale to participate in leadership training and team building exercises. GCAPS participants also toured County facilities, attended a Board of Commissioners meeting, visited the State Capitol and interacted with local and state public officials.

Students eligible to participate in the six-month program must live in or attend school in Rockdale County, and must be a high school sophomore or junior as of August 2013. GCAPS participants must be able to attend monthly meetings held after school or in the evening. Public, private and home schooled students are encouraged to apply for one of 12 available slots.

The program will run from October through April, and the announcement of meetings and tour dates will be forthcoming. The deadline to apply is Fri., Sept. 20.
