Specialty program Open House for CMS, EMS, SE, SHS coming up

Open Houses continue for Rockdale County Public Schools' specialty programs with seats for students outside the school's zone.

Thursday night, Dec. 11, Sims Elementary's AVID (College-focused) program and Memorial Middle School's STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Academy for Environmental Studies hold their open houses 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Sims Elementary is located 1821 Walker Road and Memorial Middle School is located at 3205 Underwood Road, down the street from Salem High School.

On Monday, Dec. 15, Edwards Middle School holds an open house for its new Pre-Medical Science program, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. EMS is located at 2633 Stanton Road SE.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, Conyers Middle School holds its open house for its new Center for Technology and Engineering program, 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. CMS is located at 400 Sigman Road.

Wednesday, Dec. 17, Salem High School's Academy for Leadership and Global Business holds its Open House 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at 3551 Underwood Road.

As part of its ongoing strategic plan, RCPS is continuing to roll out new specialty programs. New for the 2015-2016 school year are the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Academy at Shoal Creek Elementary, Pre-med program at Edwards Middle School, Center for Technology and Engineering at Conyers Middle School and a Global Business and Leadership Academy at Salem High School for the 2015-2016 school year.

This is in addition to the existing specialty programs: AVID Elementary at Sims Elementary School, STEM Academy at Honey Creek Elementary (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), STEM Academy for Environmental Studies at Memorial Middle School, Performing and Visual Arts at Davis Middle School, Performing and Visual Arts at Heritage High School, Institute for Advanced Technology at Rockdale County High School, Global Business and Leadership Academy at Salem High School.

The application period is in January.

Many of the specialty programs start their pilot year being available only to students already attending or zoned for that school. As the programs become established, most have openings for students who are not zoned for that school to attend.
