Social media threat prompts search of Newton County schools

COVINGTON - Newton County schools were deemed clear after a night of searching by the Newton County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with school officials after a threat was made against the school system on social media Wednesday around 9:30.

The Sheriff's office said in a released statement "The Newton County Sheriff's Office has begun an aggressive investigation into the source of the threat. All leads, regardless of how slight, will be followed up on."

Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown said in the statement, "Acts such as this will not be tolerated, and the Newton County School System will remain a safe environment conducive to learning." Sheriff Brown added, "When apprehended, the perpetrator(s) of this act will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
