A Social Circle man was shot and killed while attending a party around 9:45 p.m. Sunday at 420 Holly St.
Dana Baynes, 31, was reportedly killed by Preston Holt, 45, of Social Circle. Holt was arrested in connection with the death but police are still seeking warrants for murder, Public Safety Director Tom Fox said Monday.
Holt reportedly drove past 420 Holly St. and shot Baynes, who was transported to Walton Medical Center, where he later died from his wounds, Fox said. While the two men knew each other, Fox said the motive was unclear.
A Social Circle police officer arrested Holt around 15 or 20 minutes after the shooting, based on information obtained from eyewitness accounts. Holly Street is only one street down from the police department's office on E. Hightower Trail.
Fox said this is the first homicide in more than two years.
Officials from the Social Circle Police Department, Walton County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Walton County District Attorney's office are working the investigation, Fox said, noting that the assisting agencies helped interview numerous eyewitness.
"Two Social Circle residents. They knew each other in some manner. Don't know what the motive was other than the one (drives) up to the other one and shoots him and takes off and then we get the call. And then based on eyewitness accounts we were able to locate the subject and make the arrest," Fox said. "It's unfortunate something like this happened in a small community, but we're proud of our officers responding quickly, making the arrest and taking the suspect into custody."
