Affordable Housing Community Development Corporation, a Conyers-based non-profit organization, will host a series of workshops and meetings to bring more awareness to the need for affordable senior housing.

According to the 2010 US Census, 19,266 residents of Rockdale County are now over the age of 55. That number accounts for 22.7 percentof the total county population and is expected to increase more than 200 percent by 2030. Based on these statistics, seniors are the fastest growing population in the county.

AHCDC is currently working with community leaders to address the growing need for senior housing in Rockdale. Diane Adoma, Chief Operating Officer, said  “…this is not public housing but affordable housing with lots of amenities for our valued senior citizens.” The organization plans to apply for a Georgia Department of Community Affairs tax credit award to build an upscale, gated rental housing community which will not only house senior citizens, but veterans as well.

The first event will be held on April 10, 10 a.m. to noon. at the Nancy Guinn Memorial Library located on 864 Green Street to answer questions from residents, stakeholders and community leaders. Brochures and other handouts will also be provided on the plan to address this need.
