Rockdale students nominated for West Point, Air Force Academy

Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) announced the names of the 21 Fourth District students, including two Rockdale students, who have been nominated to attend a U.S. military service academy - Military Academy (West Point), Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy.

This year, 15 students have received appointments to attend a Service Academy.

"Our esteemed institutions will educate, train, and inspire you to help shoulder the wheel in defense of our nation," Johnson told the students. "You will learn the meaning of duty, honor, and country. And you will be asked to lead our nation's soldiers, an awesome responsibility. All of our outstanding nominees possess the kind of leadership skills necessary to be successful in school, business and in life. Graduating from a Service Academy ensures a good career after graduation and opens doors for the rest of your lives."

All members of Congress may nominate up to 10 candidates per opening. Academies usually make appointments by March 31 of each year. Those who graduate from a Service Academy will receive a Bachelor of Science degree, be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, and honorably serve in the military for a minimum of five years.
