Rockdale County Public Schools was notified Monday afternoon that it received about $2.35 million of the federal Race to the Top funds distributed to Georgia. Georgia is dividing up about $200 million among 26 school districts, with the lion's share going to the public school systems in Atlanta, DeKalb, and Gwinnett.

The funds were distributed following formulas used for the distribution of other federal stimulus funds and Title 1 funds, said RCPS Financial Officer Lee Davis. He said he is studying the parameters of the money's use and that RCPS has not determined how the money would be used.

The Race to the Top fund is a $4 billion stimulus grant to support new approaches to improve schools, such as: turning around low performing "needs improvement" schools, investing in effective teachers and principals by recruiting, preparing, rewarding and retaining them, adopting standards and assessments that prepare students for college and beyond, and building data systems to measure student growth and success.
