School-specific scores for the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests show mixed results for Rockdale schools compared to the state average and compared to last year's scores.

The CRCTs are administered to grades 3-8. The released results do not include retest scores, which will be released later in the year.

The Rockdale middle school grades performed favorably overall in the reading and math portions of the CRCT.

In reading, Davis Middle School led the pack, with about 99.3 percent meeting/exceeding expectations in all three grades, followed by Memorial at 97.2, Edwards at 97.1, and Conyers at 96.9.

All grades in all four Rockdale middle schools performed above the state average in reading in percent meeting/exceeding expectations. DMS seventh grader readers outperformed the state by 5.3 percentage points and its eighth graders outperformed the state by 3.7 percentage points. Memorial Middle seventh graders showed the most improvement over last year's scores, surging up by 5.4 percentage points. Conyers Middle sixth graders also had a significant bump with 3.5 percentage points over last year's scores.

In math, all four Rockdale middle schools peformed above the state average. Davis Middle again led the pack overall with 91.7 percent in all three grades meeting/exceeding expectation, followed by Edwards at 85.8, and Conyers and Memorial at 83.5.

Most middle school grades performed well above the state average of percent meeting/exceeding in math. DMS was 10.4 percentage points above state in sixth grade, 8.3 above in seventh, and 6.6 above in eighth. Edwards Middle also shone with 4.7 percentage points above state in seventh grade and 6.6 above in eighth. Edwards sixth graders barely missed the mark with 0.4 percentage points below state average. Memorial eighth graders were 3.7 percent below the state average.

The picture was more mixed for elementary school grades.

In reading, almost all RCPS elementary schools achieved above the state average in fifth and third grade for meeting/exceeding expectations. Lorraine Elementary third, fourth and fifth grades had the most over the state average in reading - 6.3, 8, and 7.8 percentage points respectively. A few grades and schools were lower than the state; Sims fifth grade had about 3 percentage points lower than the state average. Peeks Chapel third grade was also lower than state - about 2.7 percentage points - and Hightower Trail third grade was about 4 percentage points lower than the state average.

JH House fifth grade showed the greatest improvement from last year's reading results, rising by 10 percentage points and achieving 5 percentage points above the state average.

Pine Street fourth grade dropped over last year's reading results by 16.8 percentage points, and was also under the state average for this year's results by 11.49 percentage points.

In math, about half the grades in Rockdale elementary schools achieved above or at the state average and about half below.

Among the RCPS schools, Lorraine Elementary had the highest percentages meeting/exceeding for math in grades 3 and 4. Lorraine fourth grade improved by 5.1 percentage points from last year and had 12 percentage points over the state  this year.

Barksdale Elementary had the highest percentage in fifth grade for RCPS with 97.3 percent, a 2.3 percent improvement over last year and 9.2 percentage points over the state average.

Pine Street third grade improved the most over last year, by 11.6 percentage points, and was 3 points over the state.

The biggest drops in elementary math results compared to last year were in Shoal Creek fifth grade, Peeks Chapel Fifth grade, CJ Hicks fifth grade, Pine Street fourth grade, and CJ Hicks third grade.

CRCTs were a major component of determining Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No Child Left Behind act, which Georgia received a waiver from this year. The state's new accountability measures will include the CRCTs as part of a host of factors.

Rockdale County Public Schools school system results were released earlier and RCPS performed above the state average in every grade for reading and math.

RCPS elementary schools as a whole had about 93.6 percent meeting/exceeding standards in reading, compared to 90.8 percent for the state. For math, RCPS elementary schools was 86.8 percent compared to 81.6 percent statewide.

For middle schools as a whole in reading, RCPS had 97.6 percent while the rate was 95.3 percent statewide. In math, RCPS middle schools had 89.2 percent while statewide was 82.5 percent.
