Students and parents interested in signing up for one of Rockdale County Public Schools' many specialty academies, schools or programs are strongly encouraged to attend the School Choice Expo on Saturday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m., at Rockdale Career Academy.
As part of its ongoing strategic plan and goals, RCPS is continuing to roll out new specialty programs with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Academy at Shoal Creek Elementary, Pre-med program at Edwards Middle School and a Global Business and Leadership Academy at Salem High School for the 2015-2016 school year.
This is in addition to the existing speciality programs: AVID Elementary at Sims Elementary School, STEM Academy at Honey Creek Elementary (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), STEM Academy for Environmental Studies at Memorial Middle School, Performing and Visual Arts at Davis Middle School, Performing and Visual Arts at Heritage High School, Institute for Advanced Technology at Rockdale County High School, Global Business and Leadership Academy at Salem High School.
Non-traditional high schools, such as Rockdale Career Academy, Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, Rockdale Open Campus and Rockdale Virtual Campus will also have information and exhibits available.
A brief opening session at RCA's auditorium will kick off the morning. The expo will then feature the schools in a fair setting, giving parents and students the chance to talk with representatives about their programs of interest.
Each individual specialty school will also have its own Specialty and Choice Open House at a different date where parents can visit the campus, meet staff, and hear more detailed information.
The application period is in January.
Many of the specialty programs start their pilot year being available only to students already attending or zoned for that school. As the programs become established, most have openings for students who are not zoned for that school to attend.
