Parent Academy free classes March 21

The spring district-wide Parent Academy provided by Rockdale County Public Schools is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 8:30 a.m.- 2:30 a.m. at Rockdale Career Academy. All caring adults are invited to attend this free event.

Lunch from Zaxby's is provided free of charge through a generous donation by Cannon Financial Strategists. Childcare for children of those attending Parent Academy is available for children ages 3 through 5th grade when you pre-register by Wednesday, March 18.

Participants will be welcomed with an update on school system initiatives by Superintendent Rich Autry. Following the superintendent's remarks, they will be able to attend up to three classes on a variety of topics including: Georgia Milestones Testing, strategies and resources for helping your children be successful in school, Zumba, communicating with your children, quick stress relief strategies, automotive essentials for women, tips for avoiding arguments, positive parenting, teaching respect and responsibility and so much more.

For Spanish-speaking parents, there is a series of classes offered in Spanish. Parents of children with disabilities can attend several classes designed to specifically to address some of their needs. Childcare for special needs students is available for parents who have pre-registered by Wednesday, March 18.

Nearly 50 vendors representing local businesses and services will be on site throughout the day to offer useful products and information for parents attending Parent Academy.

New this session, middle and high school students who attend with their parents, will have sessions design just for them. Students in 6th and 7th grade will learn about community service and the importance of developing their own "personal style or brand." Students in 8th and 9th grades will discuss Balancing Between Being a Leader and Being a Follower as well as Overcoming Obstacles. Students in grades 10 through 12 will have an opportunity to leadership skills and development with sessions called "What Kind of Leader Am I" and "Building Blocks of Leadership." The students will also receive lunch and a quick Zumba lesson to keep them energized.

"Parent Academy is a great opportunity for parents gain information for personal development, obtain ideas and strategies for parenting, and learn about resources to help their children be successful in school," explained Student Support Coordinator Susan Paul Smith.
