Oxford man killed by trooper after confrontation

UPDATE (May 18, 8:06 p.m.) Timothy S. Morris, 33, of Oxford was shot and killed by a Georgia State Patrol officer Wednesday afternoon after he reportedly confronted the officer.

(May 18, 6:55 p.m.) A Newton County man was shot and killed by a Georgia State Patrol officer Wednesday afternoon after he reportedly confronted the officer.

Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said the trooper attempted a traffic stop on Gum Creek Road by the Walton/Newton County line.The suspect fled from the officer on foot into nearby woods off Lobhaugh Lane in Newton County.

The man reportedly put his hands in his pockets and threateningly told the officer "I have a gun, I'll kill you." The trooper then shot him.

The suspect was transported to Newton Medical Center, where he died at 4:29 p.m. Wright said the trooper was OK.

The man, whose identity has not been released, had outstanding warrants in Newton, Walton and Morgan counties, Wright said.

Members of the Newton and Walton county sheriff's offices, Newton County District Attorney's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were all on the scene.
