For Oxford College two milestones were met Saturday.
First, the annual commencement, second, groundbreaking on a new library and academic commons at the historic college.
Although groundbreaking happened immediately after graduation ceremonies, the actual construction is set for next week. The building is expected to be completed in August 2013.
Although, the original 1970s building will remain to a degree. It will be gutted and roughly 10,000 square feet will be added. The interior will be brought up to 21st century standards in both design and technology, while the exterior will remain true to the college's historic buildings adjacent to the library. During construction the library will not be usable and library services will be located in other buildings around the campus during that time.
The project is estimated to cost approximately $10 million.
