We are more than pleased at the progress of the visitor’s center at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit. The monastery, long a center of peace and tranquility for Rockdale county residents and outside visitors alike, also is one of the major revenue producing tourist attractions of the county. We are also pleased and proud that our Rockdale Bulldogs Boys basketball team avenged their loss to the Rams of Newton County recently. We don’t like losing anything to our good neighbors over in Newton County. We are pleased that our Sheriff Jeff Wigington has taken time out of his busy schedule to write a column for our new crime page, his update of what is happening in the Sheriff’s Office is helpful and helps keep all of us aware of the criminal elements who try their best to intimate our citizens. We are fortunate that our local police both with the county and the city are smarter and more aggressive than the ones who would intimidate us. But we are disappointed in the actions of some of our local law enforcement. First and foremost we have the utmost respect for our local police officers and their department, which is being run very well by Chief Gene Wilson. A few weeks ago there was an incident at a local bar where many off duty deputies and officers gathered after hours to celebrate the retirement of a local Sheriff's Office captain. We are not going to go over the incident here; you can read about the details at rockdalenews.com We can only say that with respect and the respect of our community for our local police, we were more than disappointed in some of the actions that occurred. Like it or not, officers and deputies should know in the eyes of the public their behavior reflects on their department — whether they’re on duty or off. We expect more and better out of our officers.
