Our thoughts: Olympics

Recently we ran a two part series on Remembering the Olympic Dream. If you missed it you can catch it at rockdalenews.com.

The success and strength of what Conyers is today can be partly traced back to Horse Park built for the Olympics in 1996.

The courage and foresight of the leaders of that day, including former Mayor Charles Walker and current Mayor Randy Mills, former city manager Roland Vaughn and committee head Matt Dixon, as well as countless hundreds of believers, is worthy of continued recognition to this day. The community came together in a way to make Conyers-Rockdale proud.

The gamble that was taken could have just as easily gone the other way and our city and its citizens would be paying that price to this very day.

It's this type of leadership that most of us fondly remember and find lacking in many instances today.

To everyone who had a hand in bringing the Georgia International Horse Park to Conyers and keeping it a point of pride, thank you on a job well done.
