One dead, two arrested after Sunday night shooting

The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office arrested two men following a Sunday night shooting that left one young Covington man dead.

Deputies with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting on the 2600 block of Country Trace, near Salem Road, on May 25 around 11 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies found Alexander Derrick Hunter, 21, of Covington, deceased from the shooting.

Investigators determined the incident occurred during a clandestine meeting on a weapon purchase.

One suspect, Christian Elijah Evans, 20, of Covington, was taken into custody around 2 p.m. Monday. A second suspect, Kahleil Barton-Smith, 21, of Conyers, was taken into custody just after 5 p.m. Monday.

Evans is charged with being a party to the crime of Murder and Armed Robbery. Barton-Smith is charged with Murder and Armed Robbery. Both are being held in the Rockdale County Jail without bond.

A RCSO spokesperson confirmed the previously scheduled Sheriff's Office block party and meet and greet with the Sheriff in the Fieldstone View and Country Walk neighborhood will still be held Saturday, May 31, 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. on Country Walk Way.
