A Newton County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was arrested Thursday, Aug. 28 for inappropriate contact with a minor and, as of Friday, remained in custody at the Newton County Detention Center, according to NCSO Sgt. Cortney Morrison.

A mother reported her daughter had been raped, according to the incident report. After the investigating officer arrived it was determined the minor, being 16 years old, engaged in consensual acts of sexual contact.

The Criminal Investigation Division received the complaint and, as per protocol, conducted a thorough investigation, according to an NCSO press release.

During a standard forensic interview, the minor disclosed “inappropriate pictures were sent and received by Jacob Allen Vanderzwart" - a NCSO detention officer - before the girl turned 16.

“Probable cause was obtained, and a warrant was issued,” stated the press release.

Jacon Allen Vanderzwart, 23, of Covington, was charged with electronically furnishing pornography to a minor.

Vanderzwart was immediately terminated from his employment with NCSO after his arrest.
