Louise Elliott Obit

Mrs. Louise Wells Elliott passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the age of 90. She was born September 26, 1921, in Walton County, the youngest child of Joseph Robert Wells and Hattie LeNora Stevens Wells. Louise grew up in Rockdale County and attended Bethel School through her 9th grade year. She attended Conyers High School for the 10th and 11th grades and graduated in 1938.

After high school, Louise took a business course in Covington and went to work at Allen's Variety Store in Covington. Mr. Allen had a chain of stores in North Georgia, and when all of the men left to serve in World War II, he trained Louise for a managerial position. She became the first female store manager in the chain. In the next few years, she managed Allen’s stores in Rockmart and Cedartown and opened up a new store in Monroe.

In 1947, while living in Cedartown, she met H. H. Elliott (Pete). They were married on September 2, 1948. Louise and Pete had two daughters, Fran and Robyn. The family lived briefly in Tifton before moving to Conyers in 1955. Louise and Pete joined the First United Methodist Church where Louise has been a member for 56 years. She worked as a substitute teacher for a few years and then worked at the Bank of Rockdale for three years. In 1964, Louise became a postal clerk at the Conyers Post Office. She worked there for 19 years, retiring in 1983. She became known throughout Conyers for the warm, friendly service she provided to all those who came into the post office.

Immediately after retiring, Louise enjoyed volunteering at Rockdale Medical Center, before having to stay home to care for her sick husband. And in recent years Louise participated in the Ambassadors Program at First UMC, making weekly visits to people who were homebound and people who were in nursing homes and hospitals.

She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Fran and Mack Cawthon, Robyn and Ronnie Moore; her three grandchildren, Brandon Cawthon, Reanna Moore, and Robyn Esther Moore; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, from 1-3 and 5-7 at Scot Ward Funeral Home. The funeral will be on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at 11:00, at Conyers First UMC with Dr. John Beyers, Rev. Dan Brokaw, and Rev. Randy Byrd officiating. Burial will be at Eastview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the "debt reduction fund" at Conyers First UMC, 921 Main Street, Conyers, GA 30012 or to The Kenya Project, Inc., P.O. Box 2023, Lilburn, GA 30048.
