Local breast cancer events in October

 October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Here are several events that will be going on in the area: 

 

For the entire month of October, Shane’s Rib Shack-Conyers will be selling pink Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirts for only $12 each. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund.

Through the rest of October, Helping Hands, which operates with funds raised through grants, sponsorships and donations, will be offering mammogram vouchers throughout the month for low-income patients with proof of residency and income at the Helping Hands clinic at 1733 Lake Rockaway Road. Road. Saturday, Oct. 6 – The third annual “Be the Boss of You” breast cancer horse ride and drive will be held at the Georgia International Horse Park. Registration opens at 8 a.m., trail ride and scavenger hunt begin at 10 a.m., the drive follows at 10:30 a.m. There are a total of 15 trail miles, with live and silent auctions, dinner, live music and dancing. Dr. Sheryl Gabram will be on hand to answer questions about breast cancer early detection, treatment and research. All proceeds go toward breast cancer research at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. Riders can register for $40 in advance by calling (770) 602-2606 or visit bethebossofyou.net. 

Saturday, Oct. 13 - Sisters by Choice is holding a free breast cancer awareness seminar Saturday, Oct. 13, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Georgia-Pacific LLC Auditorium, 133 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, with breakfast and lunch provided. Sunday, Oct. 14 - Antioch AME church will host a special service Sunday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m., celebrating the power of pink and spreading the word about breast cancer prevention. The public is invited to hear surgeon and renown breast cancer specialist Dr. Rogsbert Phillips-Reed as a guest speaker for the “Family and Friends Worship in Pink” celebration at 1790 Ebenezer Road, located across from Johnson Park. the church’s Conyers location can be contacted at 770-761-0006

Thursday, Oct. 25 – Wall of Hope unveiling. The Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation and Rockdale Medical Center will unveil the second set of 12 portraits of breast cancer survivors for the Wall of Hope at the Rockdale Medical Center Women’s Diagnostic Center at 5:30 p.m. This marks the second year of the KCAF’s mammography voucher program for uninsured women in need of a mammogram. Saturday, Oct. 27 – The Booby Poker Ride and Chili Cook-Off begins at Stone Mountain Harley Davidson in Conyers at 9:30 a.m. and finishes at The Pointe bar in Olde Town. It is a 10-mile poker ride followed by the annual Chili Cook off at the Pointe Bar at 11:30 a.m. It is sponsored by the Kimberly Chance Atkins Foundation.
