The expansion of the Rockdale County jail is drawing to a close, after years of planning and more than $27 million in SPLOST funding.
The 384-bed expansion also includes room for an expanded medical clinic, allowing the jail to care for inmates in a secure medical cell instead of having a deputy accompany inmates to hospitals, and a dental clinic. The seven-cell holding area also enables deputies to separate juveniles from adults.
Currently, the jail receives about 600 inmates a month. With the opening of the jail addition, inmates will be transferred over to the new wings in order to clean out the older wings of the jail.
