Honey Creek principal moves to RCPS central office

IN BRIEF: Rockdale County Public Schools announced Shirley Chesser, currently principal at Honey Creek Elementary, will be moving into the position of Director of Professional Learning for RCPS. Demeka Breedlove–Mays will be filling the position of Director of Curriculum and Instruction. The position had formerly been filled by Leslie Demarco, who was promoted to Chief Academic Officer. 

Chesser was formerly principal at Peeks Chapel Elementary and before that a facilitator (2003-2005) and teacher (2001-2003) at Shoal Creek Elementary She received her bachelor's in general studies at Hampton University and her master's in educational leadership at Columbus State University.

Breedlove-Mays is currently with the Georgia Department of Education in the Office of School Improvement since 2011 as an education program specialist. Breedlove-Mays started her education career as a language arts teacher in North Carolina and Florida. She received her bachelor's degree in English at Florida A&M University and her master's at Nova Southeastern University in curriculum, instruction and technology.

Superintendent Richard Autry said in a released statement, "I am pleased to have Ms. Breedlove-Mays join Rockdale County Public Schools as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction. She has extensive leadership experience in this capacity at the state, central office and school levels. I am equally pleased to have Ms. Shirley Chesser change roles from principal to the Director of Professional Learning. Ms. Chesser has proven leadership experience within our school system and is familiar with our strategic initiatives for professional learning. Both educators are extremely qualified and we look forward to having them join us in these respective roles.”
