Great Month of Service

Many seniors’ homes in the Conyers and Covington area are benefitting from a little TLC courtesy of Redeeming Love Christian Church’s third annual "Great Month of Service." Jay Pearson, the director of Men’s Ministries, estimates 25-30 men meet at the church every Saturday in August where they divide into groups and do minor home repairs, such as painting, yard work and caulking, for the elderly in Rockdale and Newton counties who are unable to do it themselves.

Recalling a memorable experience from last year, Pearson tells of a home repair where he "had to fight bees to seal holes you could stick your head through" around a roof. Mamie Sidwell, the 90 year-old beneficiary of this particular service, said, "They were wonderful…just a Godsend!"

Pearson said they’ve received calls from all over the metro Atlanta area but concentrate their efforts in this community. With the exception of a few, most recipients have not been church members, but seniors who responded to their call.

An unintended bonus for Pearson has been learning new skills along the way. "We did a minor tile job a few years ago… I learned some things to take back to my own house," he said.

Pastor Jamie Croone is tremendously grateful to Cowan Ace Hardware for donating materials used in the projects, which emphasize the importance of community. "At one time, the church used to be the heartbeat of a community. Relationships were established and grew and extended beyond the four walls of the church. This is one way to strengthen the community. We want to be a vital part of it," he said.
