Ethics board changes approved

A proposal to simplify the appointment process to the three-member ethics board, which hears complaints against the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners, passed unanimously March 27 after previously failing to receive support. The second reading was waived as well.

Poste 2 Commissioner Doreen Williams proposed to have the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners and Civic Associations nominate a member of the Coalition for their appointment to the ethics board, rather than have county employees vote on nominees chosen by the Coalition.

The previous revision of the law outlined that the board be composed of one person appointed by the Rockdale Bar Association, one person appointed by the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and one person appointed by county employees who live in the county drawn from a list of nominees chosen by the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners and Civic Associations.

When Williams proposed the change on March 3, the motion died for lack of a second.

This change had also been discussed by previous Post 2 Commissioner JaNice Van Ness, who lost the 2014 election to Williams.
