An elderly man and woman from Jasper County were killed in a single-car crash at the Sigman Road bridge above Interstate 20 this afternoon.

The 79-year-old man was driving a Ford Taurus and exiting the westbound interstate onto the Sigman Road off ramp around 2:15 p.m.

According to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Unit, it appears the vehicle never decelerated as it approached the top of the exit ramp and drove across all lanes on Sigman Road, striking a guardrail on the opposite side.

The 79-year-old driver died at the scene, and a 68-year-old female was life-flighted to Atlanta Medical Center. She later died from her injures. The names of the victims are not being released pending family notifications.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Rockdale County Special Operations Unit.

Update 6/17/10, 11:06 a.m.: The names of the victims, Joe Eddleman, 79, and the passenger Teresa Boling, 68, both from Monticello in Jasper County, have been released.
